About
Elizabeth Woodville School

Elizabeth Woodville School is an inclusive comprehensive school in Northamptonshire. With over 1100 pupils aged 11-18 years, the school is located across two sites – Roade and Deanshanger. Pupils and staff use both locations interchangeably for all aspects of their learning.

The Project

The north campus is a 1960s building which had retained its original single critall windows. The condition of these windows ranged from poor to dilapidated, and subsequently, they were having an ongoing negative impact. This was on the learning environment for both staff and pupils alike.

In the winter, the windows would provide little insulation. Due to the poor thermal properties, the conditions would be very cold. In the summer, the broken hinges and handles meant it was sometimes impossible to even open the windows to let in fresh air.

How ECP Helped

Over two phases, ECP helped the Elizabeth Woodville School successfully apply and secure CIF funding. This was to replace the windows and doors of a large portion of the school. They were replaced with modern aluminium framed double glazed alternatives that included solar control glass and Teleflex winders to support hard-to-reach openers. These modern replacements have transformed the environment in all weather conditions, providing a greatly improved learning experience.

The grey frames and contrasting panels have also transformed the look of the school. They have significantly improved the teaching areas, the science labs and other faculty rooms, the gym and main hall. It is the hall that importantly acts as the primary examination venue for the school.

As well as defects in the frames and glazing, the integrated solid panels were predominantly asbestos insulation board (AIB). These required controlled removal before and during the project. This also had to take place partly during the school term. ECP worked closely with the school and contractor to ensure all necessary precautions were in place. We are pleased to say that disruption to the school day was kept to a minimum.

As well as aiding with the CIF bids, ECP undertook the detailed design and specification, tender process and project management. This included the contract administration stages of the Construction (Design and Management (CDM) Regulations. By doing so, ECP were able to provide end-to-end support to the school throughout the whole project. This ensured the objectives were met every step of the way.

Project value

£1,300,000

We were very pleased with the project, it has transformed the look of our school. The exterior now looks modern, the windows are now functional and aesthetically pleasing. The team at ECP were professional and worked with the school to ensure that the project was planned and took into consideration the students being on site when work was being carried out. Any building work at a school involves a degree of stress. Andrew and his team ensured the project went as smoothly as can be.
