Breaking Ground on a Landmark CIF Expansion Project
The only expansion (new-build) project approved through the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) 2025/26 has now officially begun on site at Watford Grammar School for Girls.
At Education Consultancy Partnership, we are incredibly proud to have secured this project funding on behalf of the school, particularly given the highly competitive nature of CIF, and the fact that this was the sole expansion project bid approved across all the submissions.
Following this success, the project has now reached a major milestone, with a ceremonial groundbreaking event marking the start of this exciting new-build development.
From Successful Bid to New-Build Delivery
We are always proud to share news of our work, but this project represents something truly exceptional. As highlighted in our CIF 2025 -2026 results announcement, ECP achieved significant success nationally, including securing one of the standout schemes in the programme. This new-build project reflects the very highest level of bid quality, clarity of need, and deliverability.
Through close collaboration with the school, we developed and secured a compelling CIF application, demonstrating not only the requirement for improved teaching facilities, but the long-term educational impact of a dedicated new-build solution.
A Landmark New-Build for Learning
The development will deliver a new-build, environmentally conscious teaching block, comprising eight modern classrooms designed to support high-quality teaching and learning. Purpose-built educational environments like this are central to creating spaces that are adaptable, inspiring, and aligned with the evolving needs of schools.
Inspiring the Next Generation
To celebrate the start on site, the school hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking event, welcoming acclaimed author and biographer Lucinda Hawksley – who also happens to be the great, great, great granddaughter of renowned Victorian writer Charles Dickens.
During her visit, Lucinda delivered a special session to a Year 7 class, sharing insights into her work and the importance of storytelling in shaping both history and identity. Her involvement was particularly fitting, as the new-build will become the home of the school’s English Department, creating a dedicated space where creativity, literacy, and critical thinking can flourish.
Honouring Legacy While Building the Future
As part of the ceremony, the school unveiled the name of the new building: Grace Fergie House, honouring former Headteacher Miss Grace Fergie, who led the school from 1913 to 1938 and oversaw significant expansion.
